Hello and Welcome to my blog.
I am self named BaldnFabulous. Obviously for 2 specific reasons. One for being bald and second for embracing the baldness that is me now. Which can be extremely tough as a female in todays society. I wasnt always bald tho. I have alopecia universalis. Whats this you ask? Its an autoimmune disease that has rob me of my hair and I have had this disease for nearly 30 years.
By definition alopecia is described as such ...Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune
skin disease resulting in the loss of hair on the scalp and elsewhere on
the body. It usually starts with one or more small, round, smooth
patches on the scalp and can progress to total scalp hair loss (alopecia
totalis) or complete body hair loss (alopecia universalis). Alopecia areata affects approximately 2% of the population overall, .
This common skin disease is highly unpredictable and cyclical. Hair can
grow back in or fall out again at any time, and will affect anyone at
any age, of any gender, of any race....IS DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE and
there is NO CURE. With more awareness one day this will change and a
cure will be found.
What does this mean for me? Well having first been diagnosed at about 8 years of age, there was even less known about this disease. And being a child that looked different than all the rest of the school kids, I was teased and bullied. My mom tried hard to find out what was going on and help me fit in. I did grow my hair back eventually and spent most of my teens and 20's with hair with occasionally hiding bald spots that continued. It wasnt til my 30's that the hair loss was yet again faster than any regrowth. No matter the treatments or potions or pills that I took. I put myself thru alot of pain and stress to grow hair. It wasnt til September 3 of 2010 that I finally got off that roller coaster and shaved my head. And that was the day that I became BALD AND FABULOUS aka Terri.
I invite you to follow me here as I share my thoughts not only to bring awareness to this disease but also topics I find of interest or importance to share.
